Mel Gibson, Rosalind Ross Separate After 9 Years Together

Oscar-winning actor Mel Gibson and filmmaker Rosalind Ross have ended their relationship after nearly a decade together. A representative from Gibson’s legal team confirmed the separation to Reuters on Tuesday, following a joint statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

According to the statement, the couple actually parted ways about a year ago but chose to keep the matter private until now. Despite the separation, both emphasized their commitment to raising their son together.

“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” the statement read.

Focus on co-parenting

Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, began dating in 2014 and share an 8-year-old son, Lars. The pair were never married but have remained united in their plan to co-parent and prioritize their child’s well-being.

Rosalind Ross is a film director and former equestrian vaulter, while Gibson is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable figures, known for his work as an actor, director, and producer.

Gibson’s family background

Before his relationship with Ross, Mel Gibson was married to Robyn Moore from 1980 to 2011, with whom he has seven children. He also has a 16-year-old daughter with songwriter Oksana Grigorieva.

A storied Hollywood career

Gibson has left a lasting mark on the film industry with iconic roles and acclaimed projects. His career highlights include Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, The Patriot, Blood Father, and Braveheart. The latter earned him Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in 1996, cementing his status as a major force in Hollywood.

While the couple’s romantic relationship has come to an end, both Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have made it clear that their shared priority remains their son, signaling a respectful and cooperative path forward.
