Senior Pakistani actor Shahood Alvi has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments about women, saying his remarks were taken out of context and presented differently on social media.
In an explanatory statement shared on Instagram, Alvi urged people to watch the complete television programme before forming an opinion about what he said. He maintained that clips circulating online did not provide the full context of the discussion.
According to Alvi, the conversation began after a woman called the programme and asked why her husband did not give her enough attention and remained busy using his phone.
The actor said the discussion that followed was about general attitudes and behaviors among men in society. He stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as a reflection of his personal beliefs about women.
Alvi also spoke about his views on women and said he has always supported women who are confident, independent and empowered.
He pointed to his own family life as an example, saying he has always treated his wife and daughters with respect. He also said he supports his wife in important household matters and sincerely values her efforts and contributions.
The actor maintained that the image being created about him through social media posts does not accurately represent either his intentions or his personal views.
The clarification comes after a video featuring Alvi went viral online and triggered a debate over remarks concerning women’s appearance, personal hygiene and different lifestyles.
In the widely circulated clip, Alvi discussed perceived differences between women who work in offices and those who spend more time at home. He suggested that working women may pay greater attention to their appearance and use perfume.
He also referred to housewives and made a comment involving the smell of ginger and garlic while describing household work. The remarks drew criticism from some social media users, who questioned the way women and domestic responsibilities were being characterized.
