‘Wild at Heart’ Actress Diane Ladd Dies at 89

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Diane Ladd, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for her performances in Wild at Heart, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and Rambling Rose. She passed away on Monday at the age of 89.

Her death was confirmed by her daughter, Academy Award winner Laura Dern, who shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

“My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother passed with me beside her this morning at her home in Ojai, California,” Dern wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

A celebrated career spanning eight decades

Born in Mississippi in 1935, Diane Ladd began her acting journey on stage and television before achieving her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s 1974 drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She went on to receive two more Oscar nominations — for her chilling role in David Lynch’s surreal masterpiece Wild at Heart (1990) and for Rambling Rose (1991), where she once again appeared alongside her daughter, Laura Dern.

Her versatility allowed her to seamlessly transition between film and television, with other notable credits including Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Lynch’s Inland Empire.

A legacy of talent and empathy

Known for her commanding presence and emotionally rich performances, Ladd earned admiration from critics and audiences alike. Her career, which spanned over eight decades, reflected a remarkable ability to embody complex, deeply human characters.

Beyond her acting, she was celebrated as a mentor, author, and advocate for artists, often emphasizing the importance of emotional truth in storytelling.

Ladd’s contribution to cinema was recognized with multiple honors, including Golden Globe nominations and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing her legacy as one of Hollywood’s most enduring performers.

No cause of death has been disclosed.

Diane Ladd is survived by her daughter, Laura Dern, and her grandchildren. Her passing marks the end of an era for classic Hollywood — and the continuation of her artistic legacy through generations she inspired.
